What structured pedagogy means

Structured pedagogy describes an approach where the teaching method, the materials and the training are designed together as one coherent package rather than issued separately. Teachers receive a clear sequence, aligned learning materials, and support tied to that same sequence.

It is not a script that removes teacher judgement. It is a defined starting structure that reduces the burden of designing every lesson from scratch, which matters most in large systems, in multi-grade classrooms and where teacher preparation time is limited.

Evidence-based teaching practice

Evidence-based pedagogy means choosing classroom practices because there is credible evidence that they improve learning, and being willing to discard practices that do not — including familiar ones.

Several approaches to accelerating foundational learning are in wide use internationally. They differ in how learners are grouped, how instruction is targeted, and how much structure is supplied centrally. Comparing them honestly, including where each struggles, is more useful to a ministry than advocacy for any single model.

Peer and paired learning

Approaches that pair learners so they teach and check each other change the arithmetic of a crowded classroom: every child is active, and the teacher moves from delivering content to observing and correcting.

Pedagogy runs through all three days of the programme — in sessions on classroom method, in the comparison of approaches, and in the opportunity to observe implementation in schools in Lucknow.

The intent is that delegates leave with a defensible view of which method they would put in front of their own teachers, and why.
